Synopsis
"I am a woman with oil coming out of her body and whose husband has disappeared”, repeats Foziye, describing the reason why she must emigrate to Germany.
Foziye in her 50s is living alone with her older sister and their Afghanian refugee helper. Her husband, ex oil-industry worker has disappeared, and she cannot get her pension until she brings his death certificate. Unable to find her husband and running out of money Foziye , severely distressed develops this extremely rare condition.
Only in time Foziyeh realises that she could turn her body´s malfunction into her advantage and escape the daily harsh reality of life in Iran by applying for emigration visa to Europe where she also hopes to find her missing husband and to get professional medical help.
Her terrible secret is not revealed until the day her daughter Leila comes for a visit and blames Fozyieh for everything that has happened in the past inducing the disappearance of Foziyeh´s husband – Leila´s father. Fozyieh´s body gives out under such allegations. Suddenly everybody in the family wants to take advantage of Fozyieh´s condition.
However, paranoia sets and worried that this secret will be revealed to others and especially that the government might find out - the whole household decides to escape and hide in a remote farm in the middle of nowhere.
In the end, the struggle of getting used to the new environment full of hostile strangers and to make the right decision for the future causes that Foziyeh´s body stops producing oil and everybody´s hope to find new life abroad might be shuttered…..
Oil – the cause of wars and struggles all around the world, the cause of many environmental disasters is still a necessity in today´s world and one can only guess what happens when it finally runs out…..
Suzan Iravanian
Director
Suzan Iravanian was born in 1985 in Shiraz, Iran. She holds a B.A. in Art and Architecture from Shiraz Art and Architecture university and also received an M.A. in filmmaking from New York Film Academy in 2009 and an M.A. in Cult Film & Television from Brunel University in 2012.
Since 2009 Iravanian has been involved in writing short stories and the production of short films and documentaries and in 2015 after receiving a very good feedback for the story she had written for her Oxford creative writing course she started the pre-production of her first feature film based on that story.
Iravanian is also a photographer and graphic designer.
